The consonant harmonies, the rhythmic drive, the solemnity of the minor mode, the bright hopefulness of a Picardy third -- all of these are characteristics of certain late Renaissance choral music.
This setting, Renaissance Alleluia, arranged by Gary Penkala, quotes two familiar motets, "Let All the Nations" by Volkmar Leisring and "Cantate Domino" by G.O. Pitoni.
Scored in its simplest version for cantor, congregation and organ, this Gospel acclamation can be enhanced by singing the SATB choral harmonies and descant.
Renaissance Alleluia contains all the Gospel verses for Eastertide (Easter Sunday through Pentecost), plus a General, Eucharistic, and Marian-themed verse, each set in unison to the Pitoni melody.
Congregations have found this setting to be solemn, easy to sing, and indicative of the richness of the Eastertide liturgies.
